Perhaps you've fallen over the escalating buzz about Katy Perry being featured in the latest issue of Lucky magazine. (Ain't P.R. bandwagons grand?) As you can see by her cover look (attached), there's no overt Bettie Page attempt. This time, Bettie spoke to Katy's inner being. This issue quotes Katy as saying: > I’ve gone from Betty Boop to more Bettie Page. It’s less cute and more meow. (Again with the boop-boop-be-doo association!... as recently dissected in a parallel thread -- in case you're having deja vu. ) What do you think of Katy's look. Does it appeal to your aesthetics with a Bettie-esque "meow" sensibility?

The site Refinery29 took a look at FabSugar's photos (attached) of Katy Perry at the MTV Movie Awards and had this reaction: > Katy Perry channels Bettie Page for the 2010 MTV Movie Awards—if Bettie Page > had blue hair and was from the future. (FabSugar) (Posted here: http://www.refinery29.com/two-of-a-kind-katy-perrys-blue-hair-and-short-summer-hair.php) When I checked out the FabSugar link embedded on Refinery29's page, I couldn't help but notice the negative Katy Perry perceptions.... that she's little more than an attention-seeker. That being the case, what do you make of her alleged Bettie Page inspirations? Do you think Katy is truly inspired by Bettie, or is she merely latching onto her name and look to generate media buzz? And the big hanging question mark in the air: What would Bettie's gut reaction be to people latching onto her for no other reason than trying to shine spotlights on themselves?!? Sure, she'd say she was flattered as an immediate reaction. But how would she react to their exploitation and desperation?

Who can get inside the mind of Kate Perry? There's obviously a strong self-promotional aspect to what she's doing. I just think it's a great comment on Bettie's place in the culture that Katy thinks that she can get promotional mileage out of connecting herself with Bettie.

Nice dodge of the question about how Bettie would perceive exploitation of her image! Here's a very non-Bettie oriented interview that Katy Perry did for Extra's TV show. They were in her dressing room at the MTV Movie Awards program. Though in a different dress, she was still sporting that blue Bettie wig. The reporter brought up her blue hair. Katy acknowledged the color. Neither uttered a peep about Bettie. Did the reporter even have a clue that it wasn't simply a blue wig? Bottom line in terms of Bettie's place in the culture: If Bettie was all that much of a big deal in pop culture, the Extra reporter would have remarked that Katy was wearing a Bettie Page styled wig that happened to be blue.... NOT that it was merely blue hair. Video posted here: http://extratv.warnerbros.com/2010/06/katy_perrys_bachelorette_party_the_b.php~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Text posted to Extra's page.... Extracted from Katy Perry's interviewKaty's Bachelorette Party: the 'Best Last Party I Ever Have!'June 7, 2010 | Celebrity Highlights Eccentric singer Katy Perry, who is marrying Brit funnyman Russell Brand, wants her bachelorette party to be a legendary. I'm not planning it," Perry told "Extra's" Jerry Penacoli at the MTV Movie Awards. "So who ever is planning it, please make it like the best last party I ever have!" "I want to be found in an alley way, pissing myself with one of those penis hats on my head... wasted," Perry laughed. "As most bride to be's are in Vegas."

Two follow-up points: * After watching Katy in assorted (or would that be ass-oriented?) interviews while wearing the blue Bettie Page wig, it's important to note that while the wig was mentioned, not one word was uttered about it being a blue version of Bettie's iconic hairdo. * Now that Katy's "California Gurls" music video debuted, this quote turned up from Katy on the VH1 website: "It was really fun making these costumes. They're all one-of-a-kind, and I love the Bettie Page moment in the red and the whipped-cream cans." I can' t embed any of the video images. You can watch Katy discussing her outfits here: http://www.youtube.com/user/KatyPerryMusic?blend=2&ob=1#p/a/u/1/vze4NbQCGBAWhat Bettie Page whipped cream moment? Can someone explain this reference to me?

The blog, celebs.gather.com, weighed in on Katy Perry's appearance Sunday night at Toronto's MuchMusic Awards. Go to the site to check out photos of Katy's arrival in an ice cream truck and red carpet attire. The blogger made this observation: > I've grown to not expect too much from Katy Perry, style-wise. She's trying to set > herself apart with over the top looks, that are frankly too costumey to be anything > but boring most of the time. That being said, I did dig her apparent nod to Bettie > Page last night during her MuchMusic Performance, You can see two shots of Katy doing her Bettie wink. One of the images was shot from behind -- the perfect pose for the current parallel thread on this Forum about the one and only genuine article: the original Bettie Page butt. Does Katy's posterior pale in comparison? Go here to check out the shots and let us know what you think. http://celebs.gather.com/viewArticle.action?articleId=281474978317310
