Shades of the Seinfeld episode titled "The Caddy" (January 25, 1996). Elaine gave Sue Ellen Mischke a bra to keep her from flouncing around, and Sue Ellen responded by wearing the bra as a top for all to see!
Nowadays, we have Bettie as the current passing fashion muse for some designers. You know how it is with fashion. It ends up getting labeled "dated" and "unwearable" if you go for what's trendy, rather than what's classic.
Following in the trendy path are entertainers like Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Katy Perry, and Kylie & co, who endorse lingerie as mainstream fashion.
On the flip side, we have traditionalists who are far from fans of underwear as a fashion statement.
We got wind of the latest underwear protester the other day while keeping an ear toward a hot topics discussion at THE VIEW's table. Guess they must have spotted THE NEW YORK POST's "Page Six" blurb about Helen Ready trying to go bra shopping, and being left with the impression that since Madonna came along, all women are perceived as whores.
In case this got past you, pasted below are the "Page Six" discussion, plus a blog entry about Ready on a radio show -- the source of this media fuss.
Some interesting cross-posts on the "Page Six" remarks that you might like to check out.... like this one:
> Shouldn't Helen Reddy be blaming Betty Page and Marilyn Monroe too?
What's your take?

Next time you're out shopping and hear a woman roar, don't be surprised if it's Helen Reddy -- though feminist pride's got nothing to do with it.
Interviewed on BlogTalkRadio from her home in Sydney, the '70s pop icon, who scored a monster hit with "I Am Woman" -- which Sarah Jessica Parker and pals reprised in "Sex and the City 2" -- recalls a recent spree that had her seething, and takes a swipe at Madonna for supposedly being responsible for it.
"I was in London earlier this year, and I had to get some new bras -- because [mine] were falling off me," Reddy, 68, tells host Janet Powers. At a department store, "I go into the women's lingerie department, and they've got pasties -- you know, like strippers wear," Reddy says.
"They've got all these little fancy things, which all have wires -- which I believe cause breast cancer -- but nothing that's for women who are older, or who are heavier, or who would like to dress like a lady.
"So I finally said to the salesgirl, 'Do you have any underwear that isn't slutty?' -- and she pointed me to the sports department!"
Reddy, who's now retired from show business after making history as the first Aussie to have a No. 1 single in the US and win a Grammy -- seemed to blame Madonna for her bra ordeal.
"When I was a girl, we used to complain we were divided into two groups: We were either virgins or we were whores," she says. "And then along came Madonna -- and now we're all whores.
"It is horrifying to me to see these little girls, you know, dressed as sexpots, trying to imitate the latest video they've seen." Sounds like Helen definitely isn't Reddy for Lady Gaga.
The Material Mom's spokeswoman told us, "Why should Madonna be blamed for Helen Reddy not being able to find a good-fitting bra? . . . I know plenty of whores who wear sports bras instead of bustiers. Don't judge a book, Helen."

Next time you’re out clothes shopping and hear a woman roar, don’t be surprised if it’s Helen Reddy—though feminist pride’s got nothing to do with it.
Interviewed on Diva Toolbox Radio from her home in Sydney, Australia, the ‘70s pop icon, who scored a monster hit with I Am Woman—which Sarah Jessica Parker and pals reprised in Sex and the City 2—recalls a recent spree that had her seething.
“I was in London earlier this year and I had to get some new bras— because [mine] were falling off me,” Helen, 68, tells host Janet Powers.
“So I go into a big department store there, and into the women’s lingerie department, and they’ve got pasties —you know, like strippers wear.
“They’ve got all these little fancy things, which all have wires—which I believe cause breast cancer—but nothing that’s for women who are older, or who are heavier, or who would like to dress like a lady,” the beloved chanteuse, who also charted with Delta Dawn, You and Me Against the World and Ain’t No Way to Treat a Lady, continues.
“So I finally said to the salesgirl, ‘Do you have any underwear that isn’t slutty?’ and she pointed me to the sports department!”
Helen, who—after making history as the first Australian to have a No. 1 single in the U.S. and win a Grammy Award—is now retired from the pop-music biz, also tells us:
“When I was a girl, we used to complain we were divided into two groups: We were either virgins or we were whores.
“And then along came Madonna—and now we’re all whores. It is horrifying to me to see these little girls, you know, dressed as sexpots, trying to imitate the latest video they’ve seen.”
(Geez. Wonder what Helen would think of Lady Gaga.)
