Standing apart from the pack was Liz Langley of the Orlando Weekly. On January 5, 1999, she made this observation:

Do you agree with Langley? Was she onto something that eluded most Bettie observers? Or could it be that Langley hadn't seen a sufficient representative sampling of Bettie's photos?
